John 13 (31-38) When he was gone, Jesus said, “Now the Son of Man is glorified and God is glorified in him. If God is glorified in him, God will glorify the Son in himself, and will glorify him at once. “My children, I will be with you only a little longer. You will look for me, and just as I told the Jews, so I tell you now: Where I am going, you cannot come. “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” Simon Peter asked him, “Lord, where are you going?” Jesus replied, “Where I am going, you cannot follow now, but you will follow later.” Peter asked, “Lord, why can’t I follow you now? I will lay down my life for you.” Then Jesus answered, “Will you really lay down your life for me? Very truly I tell you, before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times!
Jesus came and lived to show us how we should live a life devoted to God. There is nothing we go through that Jesus didn’t go through himself (and more)! Jesus is our example of how to live and love. When Jesus tells us to love others, it’s not a recommendation- it’s a commandment. We must love others and love them like Christ loves them. We cannot be disciples, devoted followers of Christ if we do not love. Love means different things to different people. But to Christ it was simple- Love is putting someone else first. It is saying they are more important than me or my feelings. We can love this way by sharing the gospel. That uncomfortable conversation for us, sometimes stops us from sharing the life saving message of Christ with others. We can’t put our feelings first but must put the hope of salvation in anothers life first. That is love. We must forgive others, even when they may not deserve it but we don’t deserve it and God gave us forgiveness on the cross. God put us first because he loved us. We must love God first, even when it may mean losing a friendship, a job, or money. No matter what it is, we can’t put something else first before God because God never put anything first ahead of us. God is love and God showed that putting love first means putting someone else ahead of us.
My Father who is in Heaven. My prayer this morning is to be 2nd today. Lord God, I pray that I be second to all others today and always. I pray that I continue to put you first in my finances. I pray that I put you first ahead of my family and friends. I pray that I put you first before my own wants or selfish desires. Lord God, being 2nd truly is following you. Putting you first, putting others first, and making sure I am always looking for anything for myself last. I pray that I have the strength and wisdom to always be the person you want me to be and love others, love you more than I love myself. Amen.
